XM42 Handheld Flamethrower
The XM42 aims to be the world's first commercially available handheld flamethrower. Free of pressurized tanks and car-wash sprayers, and simple for most anyone to use, it also calls itself "what a real flamethrower should be." The XM42 is in the works for its first full production run. The final product will be able to blow a blast of flaming gasoline over 25' from its nozzle, and maintain a full-on flow rate of around 38 seconds. Check out a GIF of one of the prototypes here.
Now with all of this fire and power and drama and selfie potential within arm's reach, I know what you're wondering: what chores and other practical tasks will a handheld flamethrower help me out with enough to justify buying one for what I really want to use if for, which is primarily dicking around in empty parking lots with my friend Cornelius? Good question! The XM42 has many useful applications, such as:
- Clearing snow and ice
- Eliminating weeds between pavement cracks
- Controlled burns/ground-clearing of foliage and agricultural areas
- Insect control
- Bonfire starting
- Ghost busting
Clearing off snowy steps or taking out a horde of gnats with dragon's breath even sound almost as fun as filming an amateur short entitled Rain of Fire behind the Best Buy.
The XM42 seeks IndieGoGo crowdfunding through April 29, 2015. Backers will receive a voucher redeemable for a flamethrower once the company completes its production run. Anticipated date is September 2015.
