Go for (Almost) Broke: Gifts Over $100 but Under $500
My list of gifts for over $100 but under $500 exists because you want to give him / her / they / it a "nice" gift this year. And you happen to know "nice" to your boyfriend / wife / personal trainer / golden doodle doesn't just mean "considerate" and "well thought out." It has a little "expensive" thrown in there too.
But if you're not even near the spectrum of CEOs, celebs, and high rollers who shell out thousands over the holidays, a crisp hundo - or up to 5 of them - on a piece of tech or jewelry is about as close to Richie Rich's Christmas morning Lexus for his 16-year-old daughter as you're gonna get. And if you want to go for (almost) broke, this list, and the $100 to $500 range, is for you.
Gift prices are listed as they were at printing. Prices are subject to change.
Bad Idea Pyro Cage Incinerator
Now here's a Bad Idea: a 48" American steel Pyro Cage incinerator to use in place of your 55-gallon drum for burning yard debris, cardboard, and bad juju. The Pyro Cage has a panel construction with a tab-and-slot design for tool- and hardware-free assembly. Panels are lined with angled slot cutouts to improve cage rigidity and airflow for hotter flames and more thorough burns.
DJI Mavic Mini Drone
I notice DJI is careful to call their new Mavic Mini a "flycam" instead of a "drone." Just like how that Netflix documentary The Game Changers goes for "plant-based diet" over "vegetarian" and "vegan." Too many negative connotations and bad vibes around the latter words these days. But in both cases, at their hearts, the Mavic Mini FlyCam is a compact drone, and The Game Changers is an advocate for going vegetarian / vegan.
That said, DJI does mostly promote the Mavic Mini as a camera. A super sophisticated camera that will take shots of a lifetime for you, yet is simple and intuitive enough for anyone in the family to use. The drone dealer also takes a couple lines to point out that the Mavic Mini weighs less than 250 grams, almost as light as your smartphone, which exempts it from "certain regulations" for drones in many countries.
WaterLily Micro Turbine Water or Wind USB Charger
The 7" x 7" WaterLily uses flowing water or wind to generate up to 15W of power for most any USB device, including smartphones, battery banks, cameras, lanterns, speakers, and GPS finders. One benefit of the turbine over solar panels is that if you're camping near water or have a nice breeze, you can set up the WaterLily to charge overnight in the dark so you'll have full batteries in the morning.
Ooni Koda 60-Second Gas-Powered Pizza Oven
Chant it with me: Ooni Koda, mozzarella, 60 seconds, pizzapizza! The Ooni Koda gas-powered pizza oven hopes to prove itself a feat of crust-crisping, cheese-gooing engineering for all the homemade pizza enthusiasts out there, plus all the friends who like to hit up homemade pizza enthusiasts for sausage and pepperoni spoils.
Ooni Koda's first accomplishment is its compact size. Easily portable and requiring no assembly, the oven is pure plug 'n' play right out of the box. In this case, the "plug" goes into a gas supply, the power source for the pizza oven's next accomplishment, its speedy preheat and cook time. Fire up the Ooni Koda and wait just 15 minutes for it to reach temperatures of up to 932 degrees F, hot enough to cook a Neapolitan-style pizza in the promised 60 seconds.
Opal Nugget Ice Maker
So many types of nuggets to love out there, and now Opal's ice maker adds perfect nuggets of ice to classic favorites chicken and weed. It's not that the Opal Nugget Ice Maker is inventing a new type of nugget ice, but that the company has developed a fast-freezing countertop machine that can serve up "the good ice" for well under the $2,000 to $3,000 price tag on commercial models.
Nugget ice is soft and chewable on its own, and slushily delicious swirled through your favorite sodie or cocktail. The Opal maker plugs into any home or office electrical outlet and freezes up its first nugget in less than 20 minutes. For a pound of ice you'll need an hour.
OPKIXONE Wearable Video Cameras
Which came first, AirPods or the idea for the OPKIXONE wearable video cameras? Even OPKIX seems to acknowledge, and jump in on the question, appropriately naming their cameras' holder the Egg.
For OPKIXONE, though, the Egg does more than just charge its little chicks. It's also a pocket-sized microcomputer that can hold up to 72 minutes of video storage. Use the dual cameras to record up to 15 minutes of continuous footage, and then slip them into their Egg holsters to transfer your cinematographic gold. The Egg will sync and transfer your videos to the OPKIX Studio App.
So what's with the pair of cameras? Different views and angles within the same recording, perhaps, but OPKIX also points out they give the person behind the camera the opportunity to be part of the scene or experience s/he's recording. You record what you see with one OPKIXONE video camera, while a friend, or a static setup somewhere, records you.
Leatherman Tread Tempo Multi-Tool Watch
The Leatherman Tread Tempo watch follows Leatherman's original wearable multi-tool, the Tread bracelet. So now you'll not only have all the implements you need to face unexpected onslaughts of DIY wrapped around your wrist, but you'll also be able to tell how late you're running as a result of them.
The Leatherman Tread Tempo watch incorporates 30 miniature, customizable tools into the links of its band, which culminates in a Leatherman-designed, Swiss-made timepiece. Tools include screwdrivers, wrenches, a box cutter, a glass breaker, and a bottle opener, and you can order, or remove, them however you want.
Berkel Primitive Kitchen Knife
Can't wait to see what kind of primitive injuries I sustain trying to prep dinner with Berkel's Primitive Kitchen Knife. That's not to say I don't like it. The design is very cool, a fused blade and handle reminiscent of a rock prehistoric humans would have whittled to a sharp edge. Berkel's knife also looks like it would feel good nestled in the palm of my hand.
KUDU Grill - Open Fire Outdoor BBQ Grilling System
Pretty KUDUde. This open fire grilling system brings swingin' versatility to your outdoor pitmaster endeavors with a grill grate and cast iron skillet ring / pan that allow for grilling, sauteeing, searing, frying, boiling, smoking, and steaming.
The elevated KUDU mounts on heavy gauge steel self-leveling legs. Its bottom pit holds your fuel - charcoal or wood, the latter of which you can also burn just for ambience or s'mores. The laser-etched "KUDU" on 2 sides encourages airflow, in addition to enhancing your 'cueing visuals. The next level is the grill grate, made of stainless steel and providing a 20" grilling surface. The top rung is a ring for holstering KUDU's included 16" cast iron skillet.
LANMODO Car Night Vision Camera
LANMODO's isn't your mama's - or rather, your average paranoid driver's - dash cam. Rather than recording your commutes and road trips to protect you from blame for an accident, the LANMODO Car Night Vision Camera expands your view of the road at night and during bad weather to protect you from having an accident. As a fun and festive Saturday night activity this past weekend, I myself went for a LANMODO joyride. I have 3 words to report about this night vision camera: dude, it works.
The LANMODO Car Night Vision Camera projects a 1080P, full-color image of the view up to 984' in front of you onto its 8.2" HD screen. (On the highway, I was checking it out more in the 200' - 300' range, but it still smoked my headlights.) This increase in night vision, or rain / snow / fog vision, is obviously intended to increase safety and comfort when driving in conditions that aren't ideal. The camera's extended view is particularly helpful when roads are in bad shape or under construction, when you're driving routes prone to vehicle-animal collisions, and when the driver has myopia or another type of compromised vision.
CINEMOOD Portable Movie Theater
The CINEMOOD Portable Movie Theater boasts both about the big things it projects outside and the big things it contains inside. The 3" cube serves as an indoor / outdoor projector with a 5-hour battery life, as well as a content device. CINEMOOD has built-in access to streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, AmebaTV, and YouTube, plus comes pre-loaded with a wad of Disney content for kids, including 40 digital books, 25 safety videos, and cartoon shorts featuring Frozen, Toy Story, and Lion King characters.
Langogo Pocket AI Translator with Global WiFi Hotspot
Langogo is a handheld instant two-way translator for travels and Tinder dates where you know you're going to hit a language and communication barrier*. Langogo provides translation across 105 languages, including against different accents of the same language. You can also use the device as a mobile WiFi hotspot to access local information, such as maps, rideshare apps, places to stay and eat, and weather forecasts.
*Sorry, dudes and ladies, I'm talking structured, regional languages here, not the languages of Men, Women, and Love.
Bose Frames Open-Ear Audio & AR Sunglasses
I thought for sure Bose Frames, the sound mack's new audio sunglasses, would be bone conduction shades, but nope. Bose has something else up their sleeve to shove down our canals: open-ear audio courtesy of miniaturized Bose speakers embedded in the sunglasses' temples.
Don't worry, though, wearing Bose Frames and rocking out, or taking private phone calls, won't make you like the dudes on the trail with their clip-on speakers, blasting Mr. Big for all fellow hikers and creatures of nature to hear. According to Bose, their tech allows for "rich, immersive sound for you while others hear practically nothing."
EdgeCross X Home & Portable Gym
The EdgeCross X, a home and portable gym consisting of a handled barbell, balance wheel, and resistance bands, says it can provide a total body workout that will rip you like an Olympic athlete in just 10 minutes per day.
Yeah.
10 minutes of some ultra-intense, crazy MF, Into the Badlands shit. Is this what Sunny and The Widow decided to do after AMC cancelled them? Team up to create the EdgeCross X and a 10-minute Clipper Training Program?
According to its makers the EdgeCross X accomplishes everything it needs to in 10 minutes by engaging all of your muscles throughout all of its exercises. I guess kind of like how the Blizzident can clean your teeth in 6 seconds by brushing all of them at once.
Duex Pro Portable Monitor
The Duex Pro portable monitor can almost double the size of your laptop screen. Know what that means? You're gonna need a bigger lap.
A 12.5" modular monitor, the Duex Pro can attach to almost any laptop, Mac and PC alike, as well as many phones and gaming consoles. In addition to blowing up the size of your screen with a full HD 1920 x 1080 display, the Duex Pro can also split it to facilitate multi-tasking through different programs, apps, and activities. It has a 180-degree presentation mode option, plus can rotate up to 270 degrees for more dynamic use, especially between multiple people who prefer not to sit on top of one another.
Lifesaver Jerrycan Water Filter
The Lifesaver Filtering Jerrycan welcomes nature's cesspools - up to 5 gallons of them at a time, and up to 5,300 gallons over the life of the internal filter. The classic, vehicle-friendly jerrycan container is able to purify locally sourced water from lakes and rivers into potable refreshment, removing 99.9+% of viruses, bacteria, cysts, parasites, and fungi on contact, without the help - and imbued taste - of chemicals.
Lifesaver Jerrycans fill and filter almost simultaneously, and include a pump for easy distribution of water into smaller bottles, cups, and open mouths. You can also connect a hose to the tap for cleaning off your gear and yourself.
