Yuichiro Katsumoto created the Bottomless Joystick - still in concept / prototype phases - as a way for users to leave the ground during VR games and simulations. "The ground" in this case would be the joystick's trademark base, and the flat surface in physical reality the device must be set on for support. With the Bottomless Joystick, you can step inside your virtual world without sitting in a chair, and engage your whole body in interface interactions while holding a controller that "creates an imaginary bottom in the air."
The Bottomless Joystick recruits a gimbal mechanism to reproduce the feeling of a support base, and enable full conventional joystick movement without the pedestal. Katsumoto says the Bottomless Joystick would also have advanced features, such as force feedback to simulate the weight of the control stick and vibration during shooting, and the ability to use two at once to shoot arrows, row boats, and ski in VR.
In addition to VR applications, users would also be able to sub in the Bottomless Joystick for real world applications, including operating industrial robot arms and piloting drones.
