Shoot first, focus later. So goes the mantra of Lytro, creator of Light Field Cameras, and what they call the photography world's first "living pictures." Take a photo with their professional-quality Illum and you won't just get the perfect shot thanks to your flawless eye and mad skills, you'll get a whole reel of them.
With each click of the shutter, Lytro both captures and records the direction of 11 million light rays, allowing photographers to tweak the focus and the perspective of photos, or view the shots in 3D at any time after they've taken them. In addition, the living photos don't die once they're downloaded and shared online--family and friends can continue the modification process to achieve their desired effects just like you did.
Lytro creates Living Pictures first by recording an image's entire light field--all the rays of light bouncing in all directions in front of the viewfinder--instead of normal flat, 2D images. This capability enables refocusing sleights of hand with simple taps of the camera's touchscreen on whatever part of the picture you want to bring into focus; once imported into your computer, mouse clicks will accomplish the same refocusing trickery.
Lytro's second big gun, Perspecitive Shift, serves to move a photo in any direction to change the viewer's perspective of its supercalifragiawesomeness. It will work on previously captured light field photos, as well as new additions, and can be sampled along with the refocusing function on the Lytro Website.
Living Filters, also included with Lytro hardware and software, assist in creating unique, retro, or 70s porn looks.
Lytro's high-end Illum model features a Snapdragon 801 image processor 9.5 - 77.8 mm focal length, 8x optical zoom, 1:3 magnification, shutter speed of 1/4000-32 sec, an ISO range of 80 - 3200, built-in WiFi, and a 2D export resolution of 2450 x 1634 pixels. The camera itself has an LCD display with a 4" back-lit rear screen that tilts up to 90 and down to 10 degrees. Dimensions are 3.4" long x 5.7" wide x 6.5" high, and weight is 2.27 pounds with battery.
