Vitamix has always been the master of the breakdown. From their blenders that break down your whole ingredients into smoothies, sauces, soups, and sexy frozen drinks, to their newest breaker downer, the Vitamix FoodCycler FC-50, a compact food recycler that breaks down your scraps and leftovers to 1/10th of their original volume. Even cooler, as the FoodCycler eats away at the waste you feed it, it also converts that waste into fertilizer you can mix into your soil.
Nutrient-rich fertilizer, Vitamix says, though I'm not sure how my mama would feel about my dumping a bucket of FoodCycler-fresh Ramen and Kung Pao Chicken into her bed of begonias.
Vitamix made the FoodCycler FC-50 to be a hands-off kitchen gadget. Once you've filled the converter's 2L bucket, you need only press a button and wait for it to metamorphose your food scrap moths into fertilizer butterflies. The process takes 4 to 8 hours, and should run quietly and, thanks to a carbon filtration system, odor-free.
The Vitamix FoodCycler would make a great gift for a gardener, or anyone trying to live a more eco-friendly life.
